Interview
Once you
decide to record a loved one’s story, whether you or I do the
interview, it is important to complete this part immediately.
Next month could be too late.
If for any reason you are unable to write the story, or would rather tell it to someone orally, we can arrange an interview. This
interview could take a couple of hours or we could schedule several segments of time, whatever is needed, to record
the story.
When you are telling your story, you may want to talk about a certain part of your life, or have some stories about parents, grandparents, or other relatives to pass on.
We tape the interview to transcribe later.
Don't know where to start? We have questions to prompt your memory.
Transcribe
Transcription is what we do when we take the taped interview(s) and type it word-for-word into our computer. We have experienced transcriptionists who do this as quickly as possible.
Once we have the oral tape transcribed into a document in our computer, we can do any editing needed.
You may have tapes you or a member of your family have
recorded. We can transcribe them for you. You can then have the transcribed copy, or you may wish us to work with you on it further.
Write
We can write your book from cover to cover, fill in gaps, or
only proofread the text.
We
will “remove
the Interviewer” from the transcript by incorporating the
questions into the Narrator's answers. We will organize the
answers in a clear and appropriate order. The resulting
story can be in either first or third person, as you choose.
It is almost always necessary to add some contextual historical comments
and/or a historical time line to give meaning to the
personal events. Family trees are often included to make
people included in the narrative easier to identify,
particularly when it will someday be read by future
generations.
We diligently attempt to
preserve
the narrator's style of speaking and to be true to the
narrator's opinions, sentiments and memories as they were
spoken.
Our two writers
have been writing personal histories and memoirs for 13
years and have taught memoir writing since 1993. Both have degrees in English: Cindy, a Bachelor of Arts in English Education, and Phyllis, a
Master of Arts in English and a Master of Ed Psych.
Edit
We can do as little or as much editing as you want or need.
Editing involves proofreading for spelling, typing and grammatical errors, and sentence structure.
